The Medical Records Department (MRD) is responsible for compiling, indexing, storing and retrieving patient case files, and for releasing records only under proper authorisation. In Indian hospitals it also supports statutory retention periods and the careful handling of medico-legal cases, where a record may later be examined in a formal proceeding.
Why it matters in a hospital
A hospital's medical records are both a clinical asset — the history the next doctor needs to treat the patient safely — and a legal one, since retention periods, release authorisation and a clear trail of who accessed a record can all matter if a case is later disputed or reviewed. A records department, paper or digital, that can't reliably retrieve a specific patient's history on request defeats the purpose it exists for. This matters even more for a medico-legal case, where the completeness and integrity of the record — not just its existence — can be examined closely months or years after the patient was actually treated.
How Trisvio handles it
As a hospital digitises, Trisvio effectively becomes the electronic MRD: every patient record carries a UHID/MRN, access is set by configurable role-based permissions per hospital, and changes — plus opening key records such as the patient profile, a visit or a printed report — are recorded in an audit log. Trisvio does not offer accreditation-specific tooling such as NABH-aligned certification workflows. The default roles are a starting point, not least privilege: review them at onboarding and narrow each one to what that job needs.
