ICD-10 is the tenth revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, maintained by the WHO. It assigns an alphanumeric code to each diagnosis, so that a condition recorded in one hospital means the same thing as the same condition recorded in another. Its successor, ICD-11, has been released and adoption is gradual.
Why it matters in a hospital
Free-text diagnoses cannot be aggregated. Ten clinicians will write the same condition eight different ways, which means a hospital cannot answer basic questions about its own case mix, and cannot contribute meaningfully to any external statistic. Coding is also increasingly what payers and schemes expect on a claim. The cost is that coding well takes training — a wrong code is worse than none, because it is counted.
How Trisvio handles it
Trisvio records diagnoses as free text today and does not carry the ICD-10 code set or code-assisted entry. A hospital that needs coded diagnoses for a scheme or for its own case-mix reporting should treat that as a gap and ask about it specifically.
