HMS vs EMR vs HIS

In short

Three overlapping labels: HMS runs the hospital as a business, EMR holds the clinical record, HIS is the older umbrella term for both.

A hospital management system (HMS) runs the operational and financial side — registration, appointments, wards, billing, pharmacy, stock, reports. An electronic medical record (EMR) holds the clinical side: notes, diagnoses, prescriptions, results. A hospital information system (HIS) is the older, broader term that covers both and is still what many tenders ask for. Most real products span more than one of the three, which is why the labels tell you less than the module list does.

Why it matters in a hospital

These words are used interchangeably in sales conversations, and a hospital comparing two quotes can easily be comparing different things. A product marketed as an HMS may have almost no clinical documentation; one marketed as an EMR may not raise a bill. The practical test is not which label a vendor uses but whether a single patient journey — registration, consultation, order, dispense, bill, discharge — runs end to end in one system, and where it hands off if it does not. Ask for the journey, not the acronym.

How Trisvio handles it

Trisvio is an HMS with the clinical record inside it: the same encounter carries the consultation note, the prescription, the diagnostic order and the bill, so there is no hand-off between an administrative system and a clinical one. What it is not is an EHR in the sharing sense — records stay within the hospital that created them.
