GST in Healthcare

In short

India's GST largely exempts core healthcare services, but pharmacy sales, consumables and some non-clinical charges remain taxable.

Under India's Goods and Services Tax, healthcare services provided by a clinical establishment or an authorised medical practitioner — consultations, diagnosis, treatment and inpatient care — are largely exempt. It is not a blanket exemption, though: pharmacy and medicine sales, consumables, medical devices and various non-clinical services are taxable at their applicable rates, and even certain hospital charges such as higher-category room rent can attract tax.

Why it matters in a hospital

A single patient bill in an Indian hospital routinely mixes exempt clinical services with taxable items on the same invoice — a consultation fee sitting next to a pharmacy sale, for instance — and each line needs the correct treatment applied to it individually. Getting this right, line by line, is a compliance requirement rather than an optional nicety: getting it wrong either overcharges the patient or understates tax the hospital owes. Hospitals also need to keep this current over time, since rates and exemption boundaries can be revised by notification, and a billing setup that hard-codes last year's treatment can silently start getting new charges wrong.

How Trisvio handles it

Trisvio's billing applies GST selectively per line item — exempting clinical service lines while correctly taxing pharmacy and other billable items on the same bill — and produces a GST-ready itemised bill, alongside a GSTR-ready outward summary by rate and HSN/SAC for filing, rather than a generic invoice. That removes the manual step of re-classifying each line item for tax purposes after the fact, which is where mistakes on a mixed clinical-and-pharmacy bill tend to happen.
