Length of Stay (ALOS)

In short

The duration from admission to discharge for an inpatient; ALOS is the average length of stay across patients.

Length of Stay is the number of days a patient spends in hospital from admission to discharge. The Average Length of Stay (ALOS) aggregates this across many patients, a department, or a period, and is one of the standard operational and quality metrics hospitals track over time rather than looking at in isolation.

Why it matters in a hospital

ALOS affects almost everything downstream of a bed: a longer-than-expected average stay ties up capacity that could otherwise serve more patients, while an unusually short one for a given procedure can be a signal worth checking rather than simply celebrating. It is also a routine benchmark hospital administrators — and, in some cases, insurers and empanelling schemes — use to compare departments, doctors or time periods against each other. An unusually long ALOS for a routine procedure is particularly worth investigating — it can point to a complication pattern, a discharge-process bottleneck, or simply a scheduling habit that's quietly tying up beds longer than the clinical picture actually requires.

How Trisvio handles it

Trisvio computes length of stay automatically from each admission's ADT timestamps as the patient moves through the stay, so the figure feeds directly into per-diem billing and into the census and occupancy numbers in the reports module without a separate manual calculation at month-end. That also means an unusually long stay is visible while the patient is still admitted, not just discovered after the fact in a monthly report — giving nursing and billing staff a chance to check in on the case rather than only auditing it in hindsight.
